Coaching is not therapy

Therapy addresses mental health conditions, trauma, and emotional healing within a regulated clinical framework. It can involve diagnosis and is often covered by insurance. Coaching is different.

Coaching is forward-focused and goal-oriented. It's for people who are functioning well but want to grow, change direction, or build specific skills. There is no diagnosis, no treatment plan, and no insurance billing. If you're dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, or a mental health concern, therapy is the right starting point — not coaching.

If you're not sure which you need, book a free 15-minute consult and Sheri will help you find the right fit.

Three coaching tracks

What coaching can focus on

Life coaching
Personal growth, life transitions, and accountability. If you're at a crossroads — a move, a new chapter, or a pattern you want to break — coaching gives you structure, clarity, and someone in your corner.
Career & executive coaching
Leadership development, career pivots, and workplace performance. For high-achievers who are ready for the next step, or who need to recalibrate after burnout without losing momentum.
Relationship coaching
Communication skills, dating, and pre-engagement alignment. This is skills-building and preparation — not clinical couples therapy. If you're navigating conflict patterns or want to build stronger habits before they become problems, this is the right fit.

What coaching addresses

  • Life transitions, decision-making, and personal direction
  • Career pivots, leadership growth, and workplace performance
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Accountability and follow-through on goals
  • Work-life balance and boundary-setting
  • Self-awareness and personal growth

How it works

Coaching sessions follow the same practical format as therapy sessions — 50 minutes, in person in Calgary or virtual worldwide — but the work is structured around your goals, not a clinical treatment plan.

  1. Clarify your goal: we start by defining what success looks like for you — a decision, a skill, a change, a direction.
  2. Build a plan: a structured, actionable roadmap tailored to your goal and timeline.
  3. Work the plan: each session moves you forward with practical tools, accountability, and honest feedback.
  4. Measure and adjust: we track progress against your goal and adapt as you grow.

Private pay only

Coaching is $235 per 50-minute session. It is a private-pay service — not covered by insurance or direct billing. If you need insurance-eligible sessions, therapy with a registered psychologist is the right path.

Common questions

Coaching FAQ

What's the difference between coaching and therapy?

Therapy addresses mental health conditions, trauma, and emotional healing within a regulated clinical framework — it can involve diagnosis and is often covered by insurance. Coaching is forward-focused and goal-oriented. It's for people who are functioning well but want to grow, change direction, or build specific skills. Coaching does not involve diagnosis or clinical treatment, and it is not insurance-billable.

Is coaching covered by insurance or direct billing?

No. Coaching is a private-pay service and is not covered by extended health plans. This is one of the key differences from therapy, which is provided by a registered psychologist and may be eligible for coverage and direct billing.

Can I do both coaching and therapy?

Yes. Some clients use coaching for goal-setting and forward momentum alongside therapy for deeper clinical work. Sheri can help you figure out which is the right fit, or whether both make sense for you.

How much does coaching cost?

$235 for a 50-minute session, the same rate as therapy. Sessions are available in person in Calgary or virtual worldwide.

How many sessions will I need?

Coaching is typically shorter-term and more structured than therapy. Many clients work toward a specific goal over four to eight sessions, though the timeline depends on what you're working on.
