Relational & developmental trauma
Relational Trauma & PTSD Recovery Therapy in Calgary
Move beyond survival mode: heal from developmental wounds, emotional abuse, and chronic relational hypervigilance in a safe, paced environment.
Trauma is not just an event from your past; it is the imprint left behind on your nervous system, your self-worth, and your relationships.
When trauma stems from emotional neglect, volatile childhood environments, narcissistic abuse, or intimate partner distress, it rarely shows up as a single obvious flashback. Instead, it weaves into everyday adulthood:
- Constantly second-guessing your feelings and intuition (gaslighting fallout).
- Chronic people-pleasing, fawning, or perfectionism to avoid conflict.
- Deep hypervigilance: scanning rooms, tracking tones of voice, and anticipating betrayal.
- Believing deep down that if people really saw you, they would abandon you.
At Shi(f)t Happens Clinic in Calgary, trauma recovery is not about forcing you to recount painful memories before you are ready. We specialize in developmental and relational trauma, helping you restore emotional regulation, dismantle toxic shame, and reclaim your sense of autonomy.

Specialized focus areas
Areas of Specialized Trauma Recovery
Complex & Relational Trauma (C-PTSD)
Unlike a single isolated shock event, complex trauma builds over years of repeated emotional boundary violations, unpredictable home lives, or chronic invalidation. We help you untangle the persistent survival patterns that keep you feeling unsafe in adult life.
Intimate Partner Violence & Emotional Abuse
Recovering from relationships defined by coercive control, covert narcissism, manipulation, or abuse requires specialized de-programming. We provide a validating space to rebuild your sense of reality, release self-blame, and rebuild healthy boundaries.
Childhood Emotional Neglect & Parentification
If you had to become the “little adult,” manage your parents’ emotions, or suppress your needs to keep the peace, you likely carry a profound sense of emptiness or chronic guilt. We work to heal that internal abandonment and build self-compassion.
Chronic Shame & the “Fawn” Response
When standing up for yourself previously brought punishment, your brain learned to fawn—appease, agree, and apologize. We help you quiet internal self-criticism, reconnect with healthy anger, and establish firm personal limits without panic.

Why You Can’t Just “Think Your Way” Out of Trauma
When emotional injury happens within relationships, your survival brain (the amygdala) stores those interactions as active threats.
Telling yourself logically that “the past is over” does not stop your heart from pounding when a partner pulls away, nor does it prevent the dread that arrives when someone raises their voice. Real healing requires working with both the narrative of what happened and the nervous system that continues to react to it.
Our phased approach
Our Phased Approach to Trauma Healing
Trauma recovery is not linear, but it does follow a structure. Each phase builds on the last, so you are never asked to do something your nervous system isn’t ready for.
Safety and Stabilization First
We never dive into deep trauma memories right away. We first build your internal emotional capacity so you have reliable tools to self-soothe whenever distress arises.
Titrated Processing (EMDR & Somatic Exploration)
When you are ready, we gently process traumatic memories in small, manageable doses, allowing your brain to re-file past events into memory without reliving the original emotional terror.
Relational Reconnection
The final phase focuses on your present life: setting boundaries without guilt, choosing emotionally available partners, and trusting your own judgment again.

Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be forced to talk about everything that happened right away?
No. You remain in control of the pace at every point. Pushing through trauma before establishing nervous system safety can cause emotional flooding. We spend initial sessions building containment and grounding tools long before touching deeper relational memories.
What is the difference between PTSD and Complex PTSD (C-PTSD)?
PTSD often involves a specific event where physical safety was compromised. Complex PTSD arises from prolonged, repeated interpersonal trauma—such as childhood neglect or emotional abuse—where escape was difficult or impossible. C-PTSD deeply impacts self-worth, emotional regulation, and relational trust.
How do I know if my past was “bad enough” for trauma therapy?
If your past experiences continue to shape how you view your worth, make you feel unsafe in safe environments, or keep you trapped in unhelpful relationship cycles, your pain is valid. Trauma is defined by how your nervous system responded, not by an arbitrary scale of suffering.
Is trauma therapy covered by insurance?
Services provided by a Provisionally Registered Psychologist are covered under most standard extended health insurance policies across Alberta. We direct bill to Alberta Blue Cross, Medavie Blue Cross, Sun Life, and Green Shield Canada, and issue official clinical receipts for all other providers. Psychological services are GST-exempt.
