Beyond talking

When insight isn't enough

You understand your anxiety on an intellectual level. You can explain your triggers, trace where your stress began, and analyze your emotional patterns. Yet, despite having all the insight in the world, your physical body still reacts like it is under constant threat.

Your chest stays tight, your stomach knots up, your shoulders live around your ears, or you swing unpredictably between jittery hypervigilance and heavy, exhausted numbness.

Traditional talk therapy focuses on the "top-down" approach — using thoughts to control feelings. But chronic relational stress, emotional burnout, and developmental wounds live in the autonomic nervous system.

At Shi(f)t Happens Clinic in Calgary, Somatic Therapy offers a "bottom-up" pathway. We help you listen to physical sensations, complete interrupted stress responses, and guide your nervous system back into natural regulation.

Available in-person at our South Calgary office (Thrive Business Centre) and virtually across Alberta.

The difference

Top-Down vs. Bottom-Up Therapy

Traditional Talk Therapy (Top-Down)

  • Focuses primarily on cognitive thoughts, beliefs, and narratives.
  • Analyzes why you feel anxious or triggered.
  • Uses rational logic to challenge cognitive distortions.
  • Ideal for analytical problem-solving and conscious planning.

Somatic Therapy (Bottom-Up)

  • Focuses on internal physical sensations, breath, and stored tension.
  • Tracks how your autonomic nervous system is physically storing the distress.
  • Uses physiological grounding to gently de-escalate fight, flight, or freeze.
  • Essential when your body feels chronically activated despite rational insight.

Signs to look for

5 Signs Your Nervous System Is Trapped in Dysregulation

Chronic relationship stress, childhood emotional suppression, and prolonged professional burnout alter your baseline physiological setpoint. You might be experiencing:

Hyperarousal (Chronic Fight-or-Flight)

An inability to wind down, shallow chest breathing, racing thoughts, insomnia, and an exaggerated startle response.

Hypoarousal (The Functional Freeze)

Brain fog, emotional numbness, feeling disconnected from your body (dissociation), and chronic low energy.

Somatic Symptoms Without Medical Cause

Persistent neck and jaw tension, gastrointestinal knots, clenching, or sudden sensory overwhelm in crowded Calgary spaces.

Emotional Flooding

Shifting from calm to intense panic, tearfulness, or frustration with little conscious warning.

The High-Functioning Weekend Crash

Powering through work commitments on pure adrenaline, only to collapse in total exhaustion the moment you have time off.

What to expect

What Happens in a Somatic Session?

Somatic psychotherapy is gentle, collaborative, and entirely paced by your comfort. It does not require reliving distressing memories in overwhelming detail, nor does it involve physical touch:

Somatic Tracking & Interoception

Learning to observe subtle physical sensations (temperature shifts, muscle tension, breath rate) without judging them as dangerous.

Titration (Bite-Sized Processing)

Instead of diving headfirst into overwhelming emotions, we touch on stress in micro-doses, giving your nervous system time to integrate each piece.

Pendulation (Touching Resource)

Moving intentionally between uncomfortable physical sensations and grounded, calm resource states, retraining your body to understand that discomfort is survivable and temporary.

Vagal Down-Regulation Tools

Concrete, physical micro-interventions (including vagal resets, peripheral vision broadening, and motor grounding) that you can carry into high-stress moments at work or home.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don't feel connected to my body at all?

That is a completely normal survival strategy. Disconnecting from physical sensations (numbing or functional freeze) is often an adaptive defense developed during chronic emotional stress. We start with gentle external grounding and build body awareness slowly, ensuring you always feel contained.

Does somatic therapy involve physical touch?

No. Somatic therapy at Shi(f)t Happens Clinic is completely non-invasive, conversational, and mindfulness-based. All regulation exercises are guided verbally and practiced independently by you.

Can somatic therapy be done effectively online?

Yes. Tracking physical sensations, practicing vagal tone resets, and exploring nervous system regulation work exceptionally well over secure video across Alberta, often allowing clients to feel more relaxed in their own familiar home environment.

Is somatic therapy covered by insurance?

Yes. Psychological services are covered under most extended health benefit plans in Alberta. We direct bill to Alberta Blue Cross, Medavie Blue Cross, Sun Life, and Green Shield Canada, and issue official clinical receipts for all other providers.

How much does a somatic therapy session cost?

Individual somatic therapy is $235 per 50-minute clinical session. Sessions are available in person at our South Calgary office or virtually across Alberta.
