Gottman Method & attachment
Gottman & Attachment-Based Couples Counselling in Calgary
Stop having the same argument on repeat. Break negative communication loops, understand nervous system triggers, and practice real-time tools that hold under stress.
You keep having the exact same fight in different clothes. One of you raises a household concern; the other immediately defends or retreats into cold silence. Minor disagreements about schedules, finances, or family boundaries quietly spiral into days of walking on eggshells.
Perhaps trust was broken through an affair, boundary breach, or secret, and you don’t know how to move forward without constantly reliving the hurt. You might feel more like coordinating roommates managing a domestic checklist than romantic partners. Or maybe you are preparing for parenthood and can already feel the emotional divide widening.
At Shi(f)t Happens Clinic in Calgary, couples therapy is not about endless, unstructured venting or pointing fingers. We weave together the science-backed behavioral interventions of the Gottman Method with the emotional depth of Attachment-Based Therapy.
Together, we get to the root of why you get stuck, bring immediate awareness to your patterns, and give you real-time conversational tools to repair and reconnect.
In-person sessions in South Calgary (Thrive Business Centre) and secure virtual therapy across Alberta.
The framework
Why We Weave Gottman & Attachment Therapy Together
Most couples don’t struggle because they lack love; they struggle because their nervous systems get overwhelmed during conflict.
When emotions run high, generic communication tips rarely hold up. Lasting relationship repair requires addressing both the unspoken emotional vulnerabilities underneath the surface and the observable conversational habits happening in the room:
Attachment-Based Therapy: The “Why”
- Uncovers the underlying emotional vulnerability, unmet attachment needs, and nervous system defense patterns driving the fight.
- Explains why emotional withdrawal feels like abandonment to an anxiously attached partner.
- Explains why persistent pursuit feels like engulfment or attack to an avoidant partner.
The Gottman Method: The “How”
- Provides the live, observable communication frameworks and conflict de-escalation tools to repair in real time.
- Replaces toxic communication habits with concrete behavioral antidotes.
- Teaches soft start-ups, physiological flooding breaks, and how to catch bids for connection.
The 4 warning signs
The Four Horsemen & Their Antidotes
Decades of research from the Gottman Institute demonstrate that relationship stability relies on specific, measurable behaviors. We actively dismantle the four habits that predict relational breakdown:
Criticism
Attacking your partner’s character instead of addressing a specific behavior.
The Antidote: Gentle Start-up — voicing a feeling and expressing a positive need without blame.
Contempt
Sarcasm, eye-rolling, mockery, or speaking from a place of superiority.
The Antidote: Building a Culture of Appreciation — re-establishing fondness, respect, and mutual gratitude.
Defensiveness
Meeting a complaint with counter-attacks or playing the blameless victim.
The Antidote: Taking Responsibility — owning your piece of the dynamic, even a minor fraction.
Stonewalling
Shutting down, going silent, or physically withdrawing due to nervous system flooding.
The Antidote: Physiological Self-Soothing — taking a structured 20-minute pause to calm your heart rate before returning to the conversation.
What to expect
How Sessions Work: Momentum & Safety from Day One
Traditional relationship counselling models sometimes spend up to four introductory appointments exclusively on questionnaires and background histories before offering any tangible help. When a relationship is hurting, waiting weeks for practical guidance causes momentum to drop.
At Shi(f)t Happens Clinic, our approach prioritizes momentum, safety, and real-world tools from your very first session:
The First Session
Our initial meeting is an unhurried, conversational exploration of your relationship’s history — how you met, what drew you together, and where your dynamic shifted. Depending on your history and goals, this can be booked as an Extended First Session (up to 80 minutes clinical time) to map your patterns thoroughly, or a Standard First Session (50 minutes clinical time).
Catching Habits in Real Time
If an argument sparks in session, we do not sit back and let you spiral. We gently pause the conversation, point out unproductive habits (like defensiveness or stonewalling), and coach you through practical communication scripts so you experience what a constructive conversation feels like right in the room.
Ongoing Pacing (50 Minutes)
Follow-up sessions are 50 minutes of clinical time, typically scheduled weekly or bi-weekly. Relationship habits are reinforced by muscle memory; spacing sessions further apart causes couples to lose clinical continuity, traction, and momentum.
Flexible Individual Breakouts
While couples therapy is primarily conducted together, brief individual check-ins may be incorporated if personal history, developmental trauma, or emotional blocks require private attention to help the joint work progress safely.

Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What if we are unsure about staying together?
We offer a calm, respectful space for discernment. If you and your partner are navigating ambivalence about whether to continue your relationship, therapy provides structured clarity without any agenda or pressure to force a specific outcome.
Can therapy help after an affair or breach of trust?
Yes. Affair recovery requires a structured, intentional roadmap rather than simply trying to “move on.” We guide couples through specific phases of recovery: atonement (establishing full transparency and emotional honesty), attunement (processing relational vulnerabilities and rebuilding safety), and attachment (recommitting to an authentic, restructured partnership).
Do you pick sides during couples therapy?
Never. Our clinical client is the relationship itself, not one individual over the other. The goal is never to prove who is right; it is to uncover the negative interactional cycle that is causing both partners distress.
Do we attend in person or virtually?
Both options are available. In-person couples sessions are held at our comfortable office located within the Thrive Business Centre in South Calgary. Secure virtual appointments are also available across Alberta.
Is couples counselling covered by insurance, and can you direct bill?
Sessions are provided by a Provisionally Registered Psychologist and are eligible for reimbursement under most Alberta extended health benefit plans. We direct bill to Alberta Blue Cross, Medavie Blue Cross, Sun Life, and Green Shield Canada, and issue official clinical receipts for all other insurers.
Break the Loop and Reconnect
You do not have to wait until your relationship reaches a crisis point to seek support. Learning how to de-escalate conflict and attune to each other changes the emotional climate of your home.
